Rappahannock Calves Again Draw Top Rating

Again the quality of Rappahannock Angus calves proved to be at the top at their 10th Annual Roster Golf Hall held at the Front Royal Laramont Market October 18, with about 875, being officially graded as good and thinner. Rappahannock breeders add 181 feeder calves for a total of $10,000. At the average of $25.25 per hundred.

Top prize received for a single calf was 200 per pound paid by Hugh Atkins of Sperryville for a fancy calf weighing 470 pounds and produced by John S. Buckner. There were four other calves grading fancy, of which three were considered by James W. Fincher of Sperryville, and the other came from the farm of John S. Buckner.

Newell Miller, 4-6 manster and son of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Miller of Washington, purchased one of them before 1-4-10 on food as a club project while Henry Balmer of Pennsylvania was the high bidder of the other three. Top prize for a single year of calves was $25.20 per hundred for 24 head of good steer calves arranging 401 pounds each which went to New Jersey.

While many of the calves went to New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New York, the bidders began to number of head purchased was Mac Claggett, a Virginia, who purchased 75 head.

Another safe characteristic of which the consignors are proud is that each year a number of bidders calves swore to Rappahannock for the purpose of establishing new commercial lands or to serve as replacements in herds already established.

At the conclusion of the food or calf age 25 meetings were continued. Mail brought on two-wage of $25.00 per well. While the quality of these animals was far below 50c. of these offered in the regular calf sale, total receipts amounted to $3,875.25.
