(Continued from page 1.) Battle and cards of James M. Settle of Flinn Hill. Editor Settle had just returned to the county from out work where he had been practicing law in Montana when he started a county paper known as The Blue Ridge Guide in 1886. This he published until his death.

George Edward Cary, who was a printer for Mr. Settle, assumed continuation of the publication of The Guide after the owner's death. He was in acquired ownership and published the paper for more than 47 years, until he was compiled by poor health to retire. An article written by Attorney F. C. Bugnelly and published in The Virginia Star, and the time of George Cary's death, attested to the respect and affection felt by Rappahannock citizens for Editor Cary.

W. E. Compton states that he and Cary went to school together at The Alabama and Ridge Hall. He also served as member. They served their apprenticeship together with The Scots.

Mr. Compton after serving as a "pictorial" devil, beginning at the age of 12, left Rappahannock to continue his newspaper career. However, he was located in Cumberland, Md., Philadelphia, Trenton, N. J., and New York. In 1898 he set type on the "Congressional Record" for one term of Congress. He located in Newark, R. J., in 1897, where he worked for various newspapers as a printer. After the first foreign came into use, he was an operator until his retirement in 1899. At that time he returned home and moved for 15 years an mayor of the town of Washington, 1933 to 1945.

Mr. Compton graciously consented to read proof on this first issue of Rappahannock News. He has been a daily visitor at the newspaper office since the opening and is greatly interested in all its undertakings and enterprises, living over again the days of his successful printing career.
